Roulette Defined
Roulette is one of the most popular casino games of all time. It originated in France in the 1800s and the name is derived from the French Word – “little wheel”. When playing Roulette, punters can place bets on their choice of a single number, or multiple numbers. The numbers are either low (from 1 – 18) or high (from 19 – 36), odds or evens, and colors – which are red and black.
A croupier then spins the wheel in one direction and spins the ball in the opposite direction around the circumference of the wheel. The track of the wheel consists of a number of pockets, and the ball spins across these, until it eventually loses momentum, and comes to a halt, slotting into one of the pockets that has a corresponding number, thus defining the number and color of the spin.
Roulette is based entirely on chance, with a large variety of bets available for players to choose from. #1. Outside Bets
Outside bets are made on the circumference of the Roulette table. They are made of groups of numbers or colours, rather than of one specific number. Outside bets are the easiest to place and are the least expensive. However, because of this, they have the lowest payouts.
Bets can be placed on red or black, odd numbers or even numbers, and high or low (the low number range is from 1 – 18, whereas high numbers are between 18 – 36). You can also bet on columns – which refers to numbers within a range of the numbers which are in 3 columns along the longest edge of the roulette table, or dozens, so a number within a range of 1 – 12, 12 – 24, 24 – 36 respectively. Many Roulette strategies have their roots in Outside bets and make use of positive or negative progression theories to ensure success.
#2. Inside Bets
When placing inside bets, players can choose from any number within the rectangle where the numbers are. There are a number of different types of inside bets, and these include straight-up bets, which is when a player picks any number on the board, and bets on it. Another example of an inside bet is a split bet. This is more or less the exact opposite of a straight bet, and players place their bets on the line between 2 numbers. Then if either of those numbers comes up, the player wins.
Corner bets take split bets one step further, and allow players to bet on a corner, encompassing 4 numbers. Then if the ball lands on any one of your 4 numbers, you are a winner. These are just a few examples of inside bets. There are several others including snake, basket, five number, and line bets.
#3. Call Bets
Call bets are only found on European and French Roulette tables, but not on American. They are made by calling out your bet instead of placing your money on the table as is customary with other types of betting.
There are several different types of bets that are classed as call bets and a few examples of these are Voisins du Zero (meaning neighbors of zero) which refers to betting on the numbers closest to zero, Tiers du Cylindre (translated it means thirds of the wheel). This refers to the 12 numbers on the other side of the wheel, ranging from 27 up to and including 33.
Call bets can sometimes indicate that a player has run out of bankroll, and is playing on credit, and for this reason call, bets are illegal in some places.
There are many other types of bets in Roulette, but these are among the simplest and most straightforward, and a good place to start.
